Sustainable Building Science Technology (BAS) Program
South Seattle College developed the first Bachelor’s of Applied Science degree focused on sustainable building science technology in Washington state. The program is unique within the Pacific Northwest region and nationally as well. Since classes were first offered in fall of 2014, 70 students have enrolled in the degree program and 27 have graduated. In addition, the sustainable building science technology department was awarded a National Science Foundation grant, expanding lifelong STEM career pathways in the program. The college’s grant work brings together education, industry and community partners to develop the program and expand the pipeline with targeted recruiting.
Landscape Horticulture Program
The Landscape Horticulture (LHO) program of South Seattle College offers a one-year certificate, an Associate of Applied Science degree and training toward a number of professional certificates. The program focuses on sustainability in most of their studies. Their Sustainable Land Management focus prepares students for careers managing and restoring residential and commercial landscapes, parks, public gardens, and natural areas. Classes include permaculture, tree care and pruning, landscape management, pest management (IPM) and more. The LHO program also played a significant role in the advocacy, design and management of the South Seattle College Arboretum.
