Message From The President
Dear South Seattle Colleagues, Students, and Community Members,
I have been fortunate to serve South Seattle College since 2019 as its vice president of instruction. Over this time, I have come to love our learning community and am honored to serve as acting president. I will continue working with my Otter family members to ensure our college’s stability and fantastic work. I am also excited to work closely with our Seattle Colleges District colleagues at Seattle Central and North Seattle alongside Chancellor Dr. Rimando-Chareunsap.
As a first-generation TRIO student, I started my community college experience in Washington State. As a student, I met faculty members who changed my life in many positive ways and met staff members who were kind, caring, and supportive. I see that vital mission carried on today, and I continue to be proud of our staff and faculty members and grateful for the care they show to our students, community, and each other. I know our work changes peoples’ lives!
Before working for South Seattle College, I was one of the first Asian American women vice presidents of diversity in our state. Building on professional and personal experience dismantling racism and other isms, I will continue to bring joy to collaboration, active listening, and antiracism work.
I bring data-centered, empathetic, and bicultural views to my decision-making. You will find me to be open, collaborative, and a good listener, and I look forward to working together with each of you - our students, our community, and our employees - to find paths forward.
Again, I am excited and joyful to be able to continue to work with you all as South’s acting president this year.
Warmly,
Sayumi Irey, Ph.D.
