Running Start Enrollment Checklist
Start Here…Are You Ready?
- First, talk to your parents, teachers or counselors to see if they think you are ready for Running Start. Students taking college courses should have the maturity, initiative and desire to study independently. The general rule of studying varies from one to two hours of study for each hour in class. Students must be responsible about attending school each day, even if there is a conflict between high school and college vacations. Check out the Running Start web site for more information about attending college, successful study habits and the campus resources available to Running Start students.
- Then take an assessment test, call Student Assessment Services at (206) 764-5363 to see when tests are given and to take practice tests. That way you come prepared! When you come to campus to take your test, bring picture ID, your Social Security number and your high school ID. COMPASS and ESL COMPASS are computerized assessment tests. The scores are available immediately following the test. The test costs $17.
If you bring proof that you receive free or reduced price lunches, this fee can be waived. Complete the Book Loan Program (PDF) form before you come to take your test so that you may be eligible to have your test fees waived.
- Once you have your test scores, schedule an initial 30-minute academic advising appointment with a Running Start advisor. You can make an appointment by calling (206) 764-5387. Bring your test scores to this meeting as you will be discussing placement and eligibility. With the advisor, you will consider what classes to take and complete a pre-enrollment form. Each quarter you will need to meet with a Running Start advisor to complete a pre-enrollment form. This form also needs to be signed by your parents and school counselor. After registering, adding and/or dropping courses can only be processed through a Running Start advisor.
- Meet with your high school counselor. Students must consult with their high school counselor each quarter to determine course equivalency for graduation requirements and fill out their pre-enrollment form for college courses together. High school graduation requirements are established by each high school.
- Purchase books from the Campus Bookstore; check their open hours by calling (206) 764-5338. Books are organized on the shelves by course number and section. To identify required books, take your class schedule with you. Books can also be purchased online and picked up at the bookstore. Check the bookstore web site for with your class list to see what books are required for your courses and to purchase them. Buy early to ensure having books for the first day of class. Save the receipt: no refunds or exchanges are made without a dated receipt. Please note that returning a book with any writing in it minimizes the possible refund. If you are unable to pay for books, you may be eligible to receive books at no cost from our book-loan program. For more information regarding the book-loan program, please call Lynn Christiansen at the Running Start office, (206)768-6478.
- Attend a Running Start new student orientation. This orientation is usually held right before the quarter begins. You will receive information regarding this orientation in the mail after you have registered for your classes. This orientation is mandatory for new Running Start students and their parents.
