Overview of Tests Administered by Student Assessment Services
- COMPASS: An un timed, computerized test for English and Math course placement. Use of a non-programmable calculator is allowed. No appointment needed. First come, first served seating with receipt and photo ID anytime during COMPASS hours listed on the testing calendar. Most people take 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete the test. - ESL/COMPASS: The version of COMPASS for students whose native language is not English, providing English or ESL and Math course placement. High achievement can place students into college level courses. Includes listening component. As with the COMPASS, no appointment is needed and the test is un timed.(For more information and sample questions, see the ESL/COMPASS web page.)
- GED: A series of five paper/pencil/pen tests leading to the GED Certificate. For more information and practice tests, see the GED web page. Schedule your test by calling 206-768-6767.
- Chemistry: For placement into CHEM 140. Allow one hour. Test given by appointment. Call 206-768-6767.
Exam Proctoring:
- Testing Center:
Supervised exam sessions for students enrolled in on-line or distance courses. See the Testing Calendar for proctoring times and call 206-768-6767 to schedule. See fee schedule.
- Academic Programs:
Test Proctoring Center is available to all students attending South Seattle Community College who need to take a test for an online or in-person course.
Contact your instructor to ensure that your test will be ready for you in the Proctoring Center.
Students may drop in anytime during the scheduled hours and appointments are not necessary.
Please arrive early enough to complete your test prior to closing time of the proctoring room.

Test Retakes:
COMPASS scores are valid for two years. Retaking a test is an exception. Your counselor or advisor will assist you with class placement.
