Student Assessment Services
The Student Assessment Services department administers tests that enable advisors
to place students in classes appropriate to their skill level.
You do not have to take placement tests if you:
- have an official transcript on file at SSCC listing college level English Composition and college level Math with grades of 2.0 or higher (read about incoming transcript evaluation), OR
- are taking 5 or fewer credits in a Vocational Program, Liberal Studies, studio or performance class.
Not sure what test to take?
Steps Before Placement Testing
- Consult the Testing Calendar for sessions of the test you need to take.
- For Chemistry 140 placement, GED testing or exam proctoring, schedule an appointment by calling (206) 768-6767.
- No appointment is needed for the COMPASS test.
- Go to Registration to get a Student identification number (SID). (See department hours.)
- At the Cashier's window, pay the appropriate test fee. Save your receipt; it is your proof of payment. Have it with you on test day.
Note: Running Start students may get a voucher from the Cashier for a one-time only free placement test. CURRENT high school identification is required for a free test. Have voucher with you on test day.

On Test Day:
- For the COMPASS, ESL/COMPASS, Writing Sample, Chemistry, and exam proctoring, check in at Robert Smith (RSB), room 76 when test is scheduled. For GED come to room RSB 72. (See RSB map.)
- Have government-issued photo identification (driver's license, passport, military ID). GED examinees must have Washington state ID.
- Have your Cashier's receipt. This is proof you paid the test fee.
