Why do I have to take a placement test? All students are required to take a Math and English placement test to determine each student’s best starting point in college level courses. Students who have never taken the TOEFL or have a TOEFL score below 580 (pbt)/ 92 (ibt) are required to sit for the ESL/Compass exam upon arrival. You cannot fail the placement exam and you will have the chance to retest after one quarter if you are not happy with your placement results.
The placement test can be waived for students that have already completed English 101 (college level English Composition) at a U.S. college or university with a passing grade of 2.0 or better. If you have successfully met the English requirements, you do NOT need to take an English placement testing.
